Washington/New York: Former US President Donald Trump has said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet him during his three-day visit to the US next week. Republican presidential candidate Trump criticised India for “abusing” import duties but described Prime Minister Modi as a “wonderful guy”. Prime Minister Modi will visit the US from September 21 to 23. Trump, who made his first public appearance after the recent assassination attempt, said Modi will meet him in the US next week.
“These are very smart people.”
Trump said that India imposes heavy duties on imports. He said, “India abuses a lot. He (Modi) is going to meet me next week and Modi is fantastic. I mean he is a fantastic person. Many leaders are fantastic.” The former president made this comment while talking about trade and tax while answering a question at a meeting in Flint, Michigan. Trump said, “These are very smart people, you know, they are experts in their game and they use it against us. India is very tough. Brazil is very tough, China is the toughest, but we are keeping an eye on China in terms of duty.”

Donald Trump said, “We are going to have reciprocal trade. If someone puts 10 cents on us, if someone puts two dollars on us, if someone puts 100 percent duty on us, we also put the same on them. And this is going to happen?” When asked about Trump’s remarks, the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi declined to answer.
PM Modi’s visit to America
Prime Minister Modi’s visit will begin with a summit of ‘Quad leaders’. President Joe Biden will host this summit in Wilmington, Delaware. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida will also attend the summit. Modi will then go to New York and address a huge community event in Long Island on September 22. The next day he will address world leaders at a summit at the United Nations headquarters. Presidential elections are to be held in the US in less than two months. There is a tough competition between Trump and Kamala Harris in the election.
