Marco Rubio, US Secretary of State.
Washington: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will go to Central America on his first foreign tour by the end of this week and during this time he will emphasize the top priorities of President Donald Trump such as curbing illegal immigration. He will also try to convey the message that despite the sharp opposition from regional leaders, the US wants to regain control of the Panama Canal.
This will be his first foreign trip after Trump took over in the cabinet. Marco Rubio is very close to Trump. He is known for his opinion on various issues. Traveling to Central America is considered unusual for America’s top diplomat as the predecessors generally preferred Europe or Asia for early visit.
Immigration is the main issue
Rubio wrote in ‘The Wall Street Journal’ on Friday, “It is no coincidence that I chose my nearest country for my first foreign trip as Foreign Minister.” Applying is included in the top priorities of the Trump administration. Along with this, it is also in its priorities to prevent China’s growing influence in the Western Hemisphere by regaining the control of America on the Panama Canal. This canal built by the US was handed over to the Panmavasis in 1999 and they are strongly protesting over Trump’s demand to hand over it back. February 1 (AP)
