China Typhoon Yagi: After crossing Hong Kong, powerful storm ‘Yagi’ hit China’s island province Hainan on Friday. Due to this, local life there has been affected. The Meteorological Service of Hainan province said that due to Typhoon Yagi, winds were blowing at a speed of about 245 kilometers per hour. The Meteorological Department said that the storm reached Wenchang city of the province at around 4:20 pm local time and it is expected to affect other parts of the island before moving towards Beibu Gulf.

The most powerful storm is ‘Yagi’

Officials at China’s National Meteorological Center said Yagi was the strongest typhoon to hit China this autumn. They predicted it would make a second landfall in Xuwen county in neighbouring Guangdong province on Friday night. About 420,000 people in Hainan were evacuated, with people erecting sandbag barriers outside buildings and tightly covering windows to avoid possible flooding, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

High alert issued

Classes, offices, transport and businesses have been closed in parts of the province since Wednesday evening, state media reported. Some tourist centres have also been shut and flights from the island’s three airports are likely to be cancelled on Friday. Guangxi’s Qingzhou city has issued a high alert for the storm, state broadcaster CCTV reported. It said Yagi could make another landfall between the region’s Fangchenggang city and the coast of northern Vietnam on Saturday afternoon. Earlier on Friday, stock market trading, banking services and schools were closed in Hong Kong due to Typhoon Yagi.

In Hong Kong, Yagi forced more than 270 people to take refuge in temporary government shelters and forced the cancellation of over 100 flights in the city. Nine people were injured and admitted to various hospitals for treatment. Dozens of trees were felled due to heavy rains and strong winds. Yagi is a tropical storm that moved into the South China Sea from northwestern Philippines. It has killed at least 16 people and left 17 others missing.
