Targets for 2024
The federal government aims to approve 360,000 graduate study permits in 2024, which is 35 per cent less than the number for 2023. In particular, Indian students will be affected as they are the largest international student group in Canada.
Number of Indian students
More than three lakh Indian students visited Canada in 2023. Under the new policy, provinces and territories will be allocated a portion of the total permits based on population.
Permit limits and reassessment
Each region will now decide how the permits will be distributed to universities and colleges. This limit will remain in place for two years, and the number of visas will be reevaluated in 2025.
Emphasis on unacceptable behavior
Immigration Minister Marc Miller has raised concerns about some private institutions taking advantage of international students, operating under-resourced campuses and charging high tuition fees.
