Yoon was arrested with difficulty

The first arrest warrant against Yun was issued on 31 December 2024 on charges related to abuse of power and conspiracy to impose martial law. Even after the warrant was issued, Yole was trying to avoid arrest. Yun remained in hiding at his official residence in Seoul for two weeks in January 2025. There were also clashes between hundreds of his supporters and the police outside the residence. Yoon was finally arrested on January 15. More than 3 thousand police officers reached Yun’s house to arrest him.

important bill passed

It is worth noting that now the Parliamentary Judiciary Subcommittee of South Korea has passed an important bill under which it has been recommended that a special counsel be investigated into the failed martial law attempt of Yun Suk Yeol during his tenure as President. The bill proposes to empower the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court to recommend a special counsel to investigate rebellion charges against Yol. Opposition parties say the move will ensure a transparent and fair investigation against Yol.

Yun’s arguments regarding martial law

Meanwhile, let us also tell here that Yoon Suk Yeol had imposed emergency i.e. martial law citing the deteriorating security situation in South Korea. The move was taken amid rising internal tensions, protests and instability in the border areas. At that time, Yoon had said that this step was necessary to protect North Korea from communist forces and eliminate anti-national elements. However, Yun’s move proved to be a big mistake. On December 14, MPs voted to impeach him and remove him from office.

There was disagreement regarding the budget bill

Yoon Suk Yeol had imposed martial law in the country at a time when there was disagreement between the government and the opposition party in the Parliament regarding the budget bill. President Yoon was also not successful in getting other laws passed. Yun was forced to veto the bills. The situation worsened after the opposition accused President Yoon of abusing power and demanded his impeachment. To implement his agenda in Parliament, Yun resorted to martial law but this move completely backfired.
