The World Health Organization (WHO) has taken an important step regarding monkeypox (ampox) and has declared it a global health emergency. 13 countries in Africa are currently battling the outbreak of this dangerous virus, with more than 96 percent of the cases found only in Congo. A new variant of ampox has also started spreading in Congo, with a mortality rate of about 3-4%.
The disease has killed more than 500 people so far, and is spreading rapidly. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus declared the outbreak a global emergency after a meeting with experts on Wednesday.
