Protest against Halme on Gaza (symbolic)
Singapore: Police are investigating a student protest over the Israel-Hamas war at the National University of Singapore (NUS) building. This information was received from media reports on Thursday. NUS has a research alliance with Israel’s ‘Hebrew University of Jerusalem’. The student protest took place on Monday. According to the news of channel ‘News Asia’ on Thursday, the protesters have issued a statement along with the picture of the demonstration. The photo shows about 100 pairs of shoes and a white shroud in front of the ‘CREATE’ research building at NUS.
He said it was a “condolence and tribute” to the Palestinian students who lost their lives in the war. The group calls itself ‘Students for Palestine Singapore’ and describes itself as a student-led movement on its social media pages. Additionally, the group calls on Singapore to end educational, economic and political ties with Israel. Organizers of the demonstration said they chose the ‘CREATE’ research building because it has a research alliance with Israel’s ‘Hebrew University of Jerusalem’. Citing several other Singapore-Israel academic partnerships, organizers called on Singapore universities to end collaboration with Israeli universities.
Police registered a case
Police confirmed that a report has been registered in this regard and investigation is ongoing. “This is an unauthorized act on our campus property and a police report has been lodged,” the channel quoted an NUS spokesperson as saying on Thursday. Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan said on Thursday Said Second Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammed Maliki Osman would visit Jordan to deliver a check to a charitable organization and that Singapore would send more humanitarian supplies to the Palestinians. “It is important to remember that there are people in some parts of the world who need help and they need it badly,” the channel quoted Minister Balakrishnan as saying.
