Why did America’s MIT and other universities advise foreign students to return –

Washington: Many higher educational institutions in the US, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), have advised their foreign students and employees to return from winter break before January 20, the day Donald Trump will be sworn in as the 47th President of the US. It is being said that this advisory has been issued in view of the discussion regarding large-scale deportation of illegal immigrants in America. It is estimated that there are more than 1.1 crore illegal immigrants in the country. The largest number in this are Indians.

In the recently released ‘Open Doors 2024’ report in connection with international educational relations, it has been said that there are 11 lakh foreign students in America, of which the highest number (3,30,000) are Indian students. The Higher Education and Immigration Portal estimates that more than 400,000 undocumented students are currently pursuing higher education in the United States. Students holding valid F-visas are unlikely to be impacted by any visa restrictions imposed by the Trump administration. MIT urged students not to pay attention to rumors or speculation.

Deadline to return before January 20

David C. Elwell, associate dean and director of the MIT International Students Office, said, “It is still too early to determine what the immediate impact may be on immigration and visa issues as new lawmakers take office in early January while our new president takes office on January 20, 2025.” Will take oath on.” He wrote that new government orders affecting the travel and visa process may be implemented on or after January 20. “In addition, the transfer of power may also impact staff at US embassies/consulates in other countries, which may impact visa processing,” Elwell said.

Citing the above reasons, MIT has advised its foreign students and employees to return from winter break before January 20. Apart from MIT, many other universities have also issued similar advisories. Wesleyan University, located in Indiana, has urged foreign students to return by January 19. (Language)
