Sea
Will drain a bucket of water from the sea reduce its water level? The answer to this innocent question of Alice, a six and a half year old girl in Australia’s Hobart city, is ‘yes’. However, there will be a very slight difference in the water level of the sea. You can also get the answer to this question through a small experiment at home. For this you will need a glass of water and a spoon.
Water level declines
Fill the glass up to the top and watch the water level carefully. After this, remove one teaspoon of water from it. Can you feel the change in water levels from this? Maybe you can or maybe not. You can also repeat this experiment in your kitchen ‘sink’ or ‘bath tub’ in the bathroom. The main thing is that water levels certainly decline, but in very small amounts. If you remove a spoonful of water from the ‘bath tub’, then you will probably not be able to understand the difference in the water level.
We have no means to measure
Let’s return to the sea. It is really huge, especially compared to bucket. Suppose you have a bucket, which has ten liters of water. If we look at this bucket, then all the oceans on the earth are estimated to have a total of 137 million, million, million buckets of water. And in such a situation, if you extract a bucket of water from the sea, then its water level will decrease by about 0.0000000000277 millimeters. You can see on the ‘scale’ placed in your ‘pencil box’ how small the measure of a millimeter is. We do not have anything on Earth that can measure such a small (0.0000000000277 millimeters) item. This will be many times a small thing than a molecule. So, the answer to Alice’s question is that the water level is ‘definitely’ decreases, but its quantity is so small that we cannot even measure it.
Learn very interesting thing
Earth is a really interesting planet. When you fill water in your bucket, all this water passes through a process, which is called Jalchakra. The water level of the sea continues to change continuously. Every year a lot of water from the sea flies away as a vapor. Some water also goes into space. However, most of the water flying as a vapor rains directly in the sea or on the earth, and from the earth it flows into the river and finally reaches the sea. A large amount of water also accumulates under the ground and some part of it gradually reaches the sea again. In such a situation, if you pour the water of your bucket on the ground, then in the end it will return to the sea through the water cycle.
Some interesting facts
A drop of water contains 1.5 million, million, million, 1,500,000,000,000,000 molecules of hydrogen dioxide (HO2). It is believed that water on Earth was first dropped as more than 1.6 billion years ago. Most of the fresh water (about 98 per cent) on Earth is present as groundwater. (The Conversation)
