Sheikh Hasina
Dhaka: Chief Election Commissioner of Bangladesh AMM Naseeruddin has said a big thing. The Chief Election Commissioner has said that if the government or judiciary does not ban ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s party Awami League, the party can contest the elections. According to a report in the newspaper ‘Dhaka Tribune’, the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) said this during a meeting with election officials at Chittagong Circuit House.
‘Election Commission is independent’
Naseeruddin also said that the Election Commission is completely independent and there is no external pressure on it. “We are committed to taking all necessary steps to ensure fair and transparent elections,” he said. There has been a huge decline in turnout in the last few elections held in Bangladesh. In the last elections, the main opposition parties had boycotted the elections alleging rigging.
Voter list will be updated
The CEC also acknowledged the issue of fake voters in previous elections and attributed the decline in voter registration to distrust in the voting process. He has said that the voter list will be updated soon. “The voter list will be updated in the next six months,” he said. This time the elections will not be like last time. Since August 5, significant progress has been made in building a national consensus on election matters.

If this proposal is accepted then minors in Bangladesh i.e. people below 18 years of age will also be eligible to vote. However, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has criticized this and said that the minimum voting age should be reduced to 17 years. (Language)
