United Nations: Now World Meditation Day will be celebrated all over the world on 21st December. The United Nations General Assembly unanimously passed a resolution in this regard. This success has been achieved due to the efforts of India as well as other countries. Along with India, Liechtenstein, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Mexico and Andorra were part of the core group of countries that played a key role in unanimously passing the resolution titled ‘World Meditation Day’ in the 193-member UN General Assembly on Friday.
Day of well-being and inner transformation
India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Parvataneni Harish posted on ‘X’ and said, “A day of widespread well-being and inner transformation!” I am glad that India, along with other countries of the Core Group, guided the process of unanimously adopting the resolution in the United Nations General Assembly declaring 21 December as World Meditation Day.” He said that holistic human welfare India’s leadership is based on “our civilizational principle – Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”.
21 December Winter Solstice
Harish said Dec. 21 marks the winter solstice, which in Indian tradition marks the beginning of Uttarayan, “an especially auspicious time of year for inward reflection and meditation.” He said it comes exactly six months after International Yoga Day. International Yoga Day is celebrated on 21 June, when the summer solstice occurs. Harish said that India had played a leading role in declaring June 21 as International Yoga Day in 2014. He said that in a decade it has become a global movement due to which common people across the world are practicing yoga and making it a part of their daily life.
Message of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’
A press release issued by the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations said India’s important role in the adoption of the resolution on World Meditation Day was “in line with our civilizational principle of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ for holistic human welfare and the world’s leadership in this direction.” The resolution presented by Liechtenstein was supported by Bangladesh, Bulgaria, Burundi, Dominican Republic, Iceland, Luxembourg, Mauritius, Monaco, Mongolia, Morocco, Portugal and Slovenia also co-sponsored.
