DAMASCUS: Israel has launched heavy airstrikes in Syria and its troops have pushed deeper into the country, a Syrian war observer said. The Israeli Defense Minister has announced that their forces have destroyed the Syrian navy. Meanwhile, Israel has admitted to entering the ‘buffer zone’ inside Syria but it is not clear whether its troops have gone beyond the area, which was established more than 50 years ago.
Israel denied this
At present, Israel has denied that it is moving towards Syria’s capital Damascus. Israel’s Defense Minister said his country wants to establish a demilitarized zone in southern Syria. Katz said at a naval base in Haifa that the military “will create a defense zone in southern Syria free of weapons and terrorist threats, with no permanent Israeli presence, to prevent terrorism from taking root in Syria.”

Israel also said it was attacking suspected chemical weapons sites and heavy weapons to prevent them from falling into the hands of terrorists. Meanwhile, the Britain-run Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has said that Israel has conducted more than 300 airstrikes in Syria since Assad was ousted. The Observatory and Beirut-based Mayadin TV, which has reporters in Syria, said Israeli troops were advancing on the Syrian side of the border with Lebanon. Israeli military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Nadav Shoshani said that their soldiers are staying in the buffer zone to protect their country. (AP)
