Myanmar Cyclone Yagi
Bangkok: Typhoon Yagi, which hit Myanmar last week, has wreaked havoc. At least 226 people have died in floods and landslides after the storm caused heavy rains. 77 people are reported missing. State media gave this information on Tuesday. The death toll reported by the state-run ‘Myanmar Alin’ is about seven times the initial figures given on Friday and it is feared that the death toll may increase further.

More than 6 lakh people have been affected by the floods. Due to communication problems in civil war-torn Myanmar, it is slow to ascertain the number of casualties. According to the ASEAN Humanitarian Assistance Coordination Center, Typhoon Yagi first affected Vietnam, northern Thailand and Laos. About 300 people died in Vietnam, 42 in Thailand and four in Laos.

Meanwhile, let us also tell you here that India has come forward to help the flood-affected Myanmar. Union External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that 10 tonnes of aid including dry ration, clothes and medicines have been sent to Myanmar through the Indian naval ship INS Satpura. Indian Air Force’s C-17 military transport aircraft has delivered 10 tonnes of relief material to Laos, while 35 tonnes of aid has been sent to Vietnam. (AP)
