Sheikh Hasina
Dhaka: Bangladesh’s International Criminal Tribunal (ICT) on Monday issued arrest warrant against ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 11 others. Those against whom the ICT has issued warrants include a former army general and a former police chief. These people have been prosecuted for their alleged role in incidents of enforced disappearance. This is the second arrest warrant issued by the ICT against Hasina.
Warrant issued after hearing
Hasina had taken refuge in India after anti-government protests and the fall of the Awami League government in August last year. The tribunal has so far registered three cases against Hasina. “Tribunal Chairman Justice Mohammad Ghulam Murtuza Majumdar issued the arrest warrant after hearing the prosecution’s plea,” an ICT official said. The Inspector General of Police was ordered to arrest twelve people, including Hasina, and present them before the tribunal on 12 February.
Sheikh Hasina accused of embezzlement
Recently an anti-corruption committee in Bangladesh has initiated investigation against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her family in connection with allegations of embezzlement of US$5 billion in the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant. Indian companies are involved in the construction of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant in Bangladesh. It is being constructed by Russian government company Rosatom. The first Bangladeshi nuclear power plant, designed by Russia, is being built at Rooppur, 160 kilometers west of Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka.
Relations between India and Bangladesh are not normal
Meanwhile, let us also tell here that after Hasina’s removal from power and Mohammad Yunus becoming the country’s Chief Advisor, relations between India and Bangladesh have declined, especially due to increasing attacks on Hindu minorities. The interim government of Bangladesh has promised to extradite Hasina and has also sent a diplomatic note to India on the matter. Hasina has been living in a safe haven in India since August.
