The government is taking all necessary steps to reduce pollution. In such a situation, it will become mandatory for all vehicles to obtain fitness proof from the Automated Testing Station from next year itself. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has notified amendments to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, which makes it mandatory for vehicles to obtain a fitness certificate from a registered automated testing station.

According to the notification, such verification will become mandatory for heavy goods vehicles/heavy passenger motor vehicles from 01 April 2023 and for medium goods vehicles/medium passenger motor vehicles and light motor vehicles (transport) from 01 June 2024.

The ministry had earlier issued a draft notification proposing changes in the rules and had given 30 days to submit objections or suggestions before issuing the final notification. The rules provide for a fitness certificate for two years for vehicles older than eight years and one year for vehicles older than eight years.
