BSNL Disinvestment: A big statement has come out from the government regarding the disinvestment of the state-owned telecom company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited ie BSNL. The government is not considering the disinvestment of BSNL. In fact, the Ministry of Communications said in the Lok Sabha that there is no plan for disinvestment of state-owned telecom company BSNL.

In fact, DMK MP in Lok Sabha DM Kathir Anand asked whether the company’s assets would be taken into account for disinvestment of BSNL, Minister of State for Communications Devusinh Chouhan replied, “There is no plan for disinvestment of BSNL as of now.” Complete data on immovable assets of BSNL in the country including buildings, land, towers and telecom equipment was sought from the government.

According to the ministry, BSNL has 3266 buildings, 1388 towers and satellites, 21042 telecom equipment and 686 non-telecom equipment in all circles. Telecom equipment includes plant, cable, computer server, installation test equipment, lines and wires, customer installation. Whereas non-telecom equipment includes computer-end user equipment, electrical fittings, furniture and fixtures, automotive and launches.

BSNL’s loss doubled in 2018-19 to about Rs 15,000 crore from 2017-18. It reported a loss of Rs 7,993 crore in 2017-18 and Rs 4,793 crore in 2016-17. The company had a loss of Rs 15,499.58 crore in 2019-20.
The consolidated loss narrowed to Rs 7,441.11 crore for the financial year ended March 31, 2021. “The loss is mainly due to reduction in salaries of employees due to voluntary retirement by 78,569 employees,” a BSNL official said.

27,033.6 crore debt
The total assets of BSNL declined to Rs 51,686.8 crore during FY 2021 from Rs 59,139.82 crore in the previous year. The outstanding debt of the company increased to Rs 27,033.6 crore in FY 2020-21 from Rs 21,674.74 crore in FY 2019-20.
