Students of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras have started a social campaign called ‘UnMute’. The campaign aims to promote hygiene during menstruation and self-defense against sexual harassment. Through this campaign, all the students will make women aware to speak openly on these issues. This is a unique initiative in itself. Today’s women are becoming self-reliant but due to some chaotic elements of the society, they often lag behind in self-defense. In such a situation, this campaign will work to instill confidence in them.
In fact, as part of Shastra 2022, students distributed sanitary pads in Bengaluru on the occasion of the Annual Technical Festival of IIT Madras. These work are being done by the students in association with NGOs like Chudar, Go-Hygiene, CRY, Sakhya and Swayam.
These awareness campaigns are being run not only from today, but from October 16, under which all school going girls are being made aware about self-defense against gender inequality and sexual harassment.
Ratna Kumar Annabattula, Faculty Advisor, Shastra 2022, IIT Madras, said, “This year the team has started a new initiative called Unmute. Under this, women and school students will be made aware of menstrual hygiene management and self-defense against sexual harassment. Collaborating with various NGOs will help the students to instill confidence in women for the life ahead of them.”

We will teach them to fight for self defence.”
Commenting on the campaign, IIT Madras said, “Every year, the Shastra team identifies a social issue and takes initiatives to tackle it. This year under Shastra 2022, students have launched ‘Unmute’ campaign. The ‘Unmute’ campaign was actually launched on October 24.
