Karnataka Hijab Controversy: The Karnataka Minorities Welfare Department has prohibited school students from wearing hijabs, saffron gamchas, scarves and similar religious flags, clothing with other religious symbols, etc., inside classrooms till further orders. The State Minorities Department has also issued a circular in this regard late on Thursday evening. Hijab, burqa and saffron gamcha are banned in all educational institutions on the basis of the interim order of the Karnataka High Court.
Admission to classes will be available only after unloading
The Karnataka Minorities Department in its circular has appealed to the government and all other stakeholders to open schools, colleges and all educational institutions and start classes. The department further said that till the disposal of the petitions in the hijab dispute case, students of all religions will not be allowed to wear hijab, burqa, saffron gamcha etc. in any educational institution. Admission will be given to the classes only after removing them.
Will be applicable even in institutions with dress code
Along with this, the commission has also made it clear that these guidelines will also be applicable to all those educational institutions where the dress code prescribed by the college committee is applicable. They will also have to follow the directions as per the orders of the High Court.
Case is pending in Karnataka High Court
Regular hearing is going on in the Karnataka High Court regarding the Karnataka Hijab controversy. Till the final decision came, the High Court had banned the wearing of religious clothes like hijab, burqa, saffron gamcha etc. But despite this, incidents like dharna-demonstration in support of hijab were continuously coming out outside many educational institutions of the state.
Conflict and conflict between parents and teachers
There have also been incidents of tussle and squabbles between parents and teachers in many schools due to denial of hijab-wearing girl students to classes. On Thursday too, many girl students insisted on attending classes wearing hijab and burqa. Protests took place in Ballari, Belagavi, while in Chikkamagaluru, a rally was taken out in support of Hijab.
