New Delhi. Often one finds people making such comments on social media who raise the question as to why judges of the Supreme Court and High Court are given long summer leave. A bench of the Supreme Court itself commented on this issue on Wednesday. According to Hindustan Times report, the bench of Justice BR Gavai and Justice Sandeep Mehta said that those who criticize that the apex court and the High Court take long holidays, do not understand that judges do not get holidays even on Saturdays and Sundays. .
The bench made this comment when Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said that those who criticize that the Supreme Court and High Courts take long leaves do not know how judges work. The issue of leave came to the fore when the Supreme Court posted the West Bengal case for arguments on Thursday. Told both sides that the Supreme Court is going on summer vacation on May 20. In such a situation, the debate should be completed before this.
“Those who criticize that the Supreme Court and the High Court are on long holidays do not know how judges work,” Mehta told the bench. On this, Justice Gavai said, “Those who criticize do not understand that we do not have holidays on Saturday and Sunday. Other functions, conferences also take place.” Mehta, appearing for the Center in the West Bengal case, told the bench that the apex court judges adjudicate 50-60 cases daily and they are eligible for leave.
Senior lawyer Kapil Sibal, who is representing the case, said, “This is the most difficult task in the country.” The bench said that during holidays, judges write judgments in the cases heard by them. “Long decisions have to be written during holidays.” It said that the decision in the case can be written during the summer holidays. “People who don’t know the system criticize it,” Mehta said.
