UPSC IAS: Why is the subject of History and Politics important?
Students and candidates aspiring to appear for UPSC Civil Services start their preparation with two subjects- Indian Polity and Indian History. Candidates cannot expect zero questions from these two subjects. In fact, around 25% of the papers consist of questions from both these subjects. This has been a pattern of UPSC CSE since last 10 years.
Indian History
History is divided into three parts- Ancient Indian History, Medieval Indian History and Modern Indian History. Politics is a single subject in which 25-30 chapters have to be read and revised.
In UPSC CSE 2021 Prelims, the percentage of questions from Modern History was 7.4% overall. From 2013 to 2021, the average number of questions per year from Modern History of India has been 7. In 2020, there were 7 questions, which were 1 less than in 2019 and the 2018 paper had 13 questions from Modern History.
No candidate can take the risk of not attempting 7-8 questions in prelims because even a 1 mark shortfall in UPSC CSE leads to failure.
In the year 2020, questions on Indian Polity comprised 15.3% of the entire preliminary exam paper. Take a look at the table given below to understand the importance of Indian Polity in UPSC CSE.
