What is history (IAF DAY history)
Before the country became independent, the Air Force was called Royal Indian Air Force (RIAF). The first squadron of the Air Force was formed on 1 April 1933, which included 6 IAF-trained officers and 19 air constables. After independence, the word “Royal” was removed from the name of the Air Force and just “Indian Air Force”. The Indian Air Force also played an important role during the Second World War.
Before independence, the Air Force worked under the Army only. The credit for ‘liberating’ the Air Force from the Army goes to the first Commander in Chief of the Indian Air Force, Air Marshal Sir Thomas W. Elmhurst. After independence, Sir Thomas W. Elmhurst was made Air Marshal, the first Chief of the Indian Air Force. He held this post from 15 August 1947 to 22 February 1950.
