MUMBAI: Rockstar Kurt Cobain’s electric guitar, which he played in his band Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” music video, was auctioned for around $5 million. On May 22, a Fender Mustang electric guitar was bought by Jim Irce Collection in Indianapolis at Julian’s auction on May 22, Variety magazine reported. The guitar was auctioned for approximately $4.5 million, while its original price was estimated at $600,000.
In his last interview with Guitar World, Cobain stated that this 1969 guitar was one of his favourites. He said, ‘I play guitar with the left hand and it’s not very easy to find reasonably priced, high quality guitars that are played with the left hand, but out of all the guitars in the whole world, the Fender Mustang is my favorite. I have only two such guitars. Apart from playing the guitar at various concerts, the late singer-songwriter also used it for studio recording sessions for ‘Nevermind’ and ‘In Utero’.

The guitar was previously displayed at Seattle’s ‘Experience Music Project’, now known as the MOPOP Museum of Pop Culture. The Cobain family will donate a portion of the proceeds from the auction to ‘Kicking the Stigma – The Erases Initiative’, which works to raise awareness of mental health disorders and dispel misconceptions about these diseases.
