The story of bloodshed between two families in Kerala’s Wayanad district is told from generation to generation ‘Paka’
Toronto, Sep 20 (IANS) | Director Nitin Lukos’ debut Malayalam film ‘Paka’, which has the tag line ‘River of Blood’ in English, premiered at the 46th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). ‘Paka’ is the story of generation after generation of bloodshed between two families in Wayanad district of Kerala. This bloody drama takes place in a small rural town, where two Klan bodies regularly appear to flow into a river. In fact, the film begins with a big-mustache swimmer named Jose being called upon to pull another body out of the river, making him a local legend.
As the film’s generational vendetta unfolds, the two families seek revenge for their dead and Pratigya. Their bloodshed began generations ago, when the Vettikal family asked for a girl’s hand in marriage. But the other family had refused to give a hand, closing this bloody cycle. After generation after generation, there comes a twist in the bloody story. Anna (Vinita Koshy) from the Vettel family falls in love with Johnny (Basil Pauloz) from another family and they secretly marry.
But their wedding plans fall apart as Johnny’s uncle, Kocheppu (Jose Kizhakkan), suddenly arrives in town after being released from prison to seek a revenge. Like an undertaking, he regrets his crime and seeks peace between the two families. Instead, her presence after long years only reignites the cycle of revenge. Soon his body is also found in the river. With love for Anna in his heart, what will Johnny do next? Will avenge Kocheppu’s death? Or will we put an end to the spectacle of mutual death? But his bed-ridden grandmother, who never appears on screen, wants nothing but revenge.
‘Paka’ hits its high point when the old woman asks her grandson to pull out an old trunk from under her bed and then tells him, it has a dagger wrapped in cloth. this one is for you. It belonged to your ancestors. Now it’s yours. You must take revenge. ‘Paka’ investigates whether Johnny and Anna can close the dark chapter between their two families? For such a terrifying story, the director has done a good job of keeping the violence off-screen.
