New Delhi. Today is the birthday of Satyajit Ray, the first filmmaker to start the Film Society in Kolkata in 1948. Satyajit Ray is the biggest name in Indian cinema after Dadasaheb Phalke. Satyajit Ray is included in those big stars who hoisted the flag of Indian cinema abroad. Satyajit Ray always showed the real picture of the country as it is in his films without any ambiguity. Satyajit Ray’s main films include ‘Shatranj Ke Khiladi’, ‘Pather Panchali’, Devi and Charulata. The film ‘Pather Panchali’ is still considered a milestone in Indian cinema. The film was produced in three parts, out of which the first part was ‘Pathar Panchali’, the second part ‘Aparajito’ and the third part was ‘The World of Apu’.
Satyajit Ray, who was going through a difficult time, had to mortgage his wife’s jewelry to make these films. The difficult-to-make film faced a lot of criticism in India, as it depicted India’s poverty so clearly. Especially the situation in West Bengal was shown quite openly. Satyajit Ray is the only director in the country who has been honored with the Oscar Award. Satyajit Ray also received the Oscar Honorary Award for Lifetime Achievement in the year 1992. At the time when he was given this award, he was very ill and due to this he was admitted to the hospital.
Born on 2 May 1921 in Kolkata city, Satyajit Ray said his last goodbye to the world on 23 April 1992 in Kolkata, the city of his birth. He died of a heart attack. Satyajit Ray was honored with 32 national awards including Bharat Ratna.
