Raising the Kashmir issue seems to be a guarantee of commercial success in Hindi or Indian films these days. The unexpected success of ‘Kashmir Files’ has also done so. Perhaps this is the reason why Shashi Kiran Tikka has also added a tinge to Kashmir in the film ‘Major’ on the life of Army Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, who was killed during the 2008 Taj Hotel attack by Pakistani terrorists.
In the beginning and end of the film also Unnikrishnan is shown roaming around in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir. All this probably because of the competition of this film with ‘Emperor Prithviraj’ at the box office. Viewers now have to decide who is the bigger hero, Sandeep Unnikrishnan or Prithviraj? By the way, this film is made in Hindi and Telugu.
Of course Major’ is a story of valor. Director Tikka portrays Sandeep Unnikrishnan (Advi Shesh) as a brave man who is ready to kill for others even before joining the army. However, from his parents to his girlfriend, he used to say that do not do this. After joining the army, he is unable to find time even for his wife Isha (Sai Manjrekar), who was once his girlfriend.
The matter reaches to divorce between the two. But Sandeep reaches the Taj Hotel under terror to prove himself as a true soldier. Although initially his duty was not put there, but he goes there after urging his superiors. He loses his life in connection with saving a girl and a woman trapped there.
As a Sandeep actor, Adi Shesh’s expression-filled face always keeps the audience engaged with him. Saiee Manjrekar looks charming in the opening scenes. Especially in romantic scenes. His role is minor. Prakash Raj’s role as Sandeep’s father is also heartwarming. ‘Major’ is not a war but the story of a soldier’s self-sacrifice.
