Who is The Immortal Ashwatthama: In Sanatan Hindu religion it is believed that there are 7 Chiranjeevis in this world. That means there are 7 such people who have been alive for centuries and have seen eras and centuries passing in front of them. These 7 are Chiranjeevi, 1. Parashuram, 2. Hanuman, 3. Maharishi Ved Vyas, 4. Vibhishan, 5 Kripacharya, 6 Ashwatthama and 7 Mahabali. Today we are telling you the story of Ashwatthama among these Chiranjeevis. Ashwatthama is once again in the headlines these days, due to actor Shahid Kapoor’s new film, ‘Ashwatthama’, announced on Amazon Prime. However, let us remind you that Before Shahid Kapoor, the film of the same title was announced with actor Vicky Kaushal. We are going to tell you about this Ashwatthama whose character people of the film world are desperate to bring on screen. Ashwatthama, who became Chiranjeevi not because of blessings but because of the curse of Shri Krishna.
Ashwatthama was the son of Kauravas and Pandavas.
Chiranjeevi means one who is immortal i.e. a person who has crossed the boundaries of life and death. Similarly Chiranjeevi is called Drona’s son Ashwatthama. Ashwatthama is the son of Dronacharya and Kripi, the guru of Kauravas and Pandavas. It was Dronacharya who taught the art of weapons to the Kauravas and Pandavas. Understanding his favor towards Hastinapur, Guru Drona decided to fight the war on behalf of the Kauravas. He became the commander of the Kauravas. Ashwatthama was also with him and he was also a good friend of Duryodhana.

Ashwatthama was killed…
In the Mahabharata war, Guru Dronacharya fought on behalf of the Kauravas. The army of Pandavas was feeling helpless in front of Guru Drona. Ashwatthama had also killed many Pandava warriors in the war. With this father-son duo, it seemed impossible for the Pandavas to win the Mahabharata war. In such a situation, Shri Krishna asked Yudhishthir to take help of diplomacy. During the war, the news was spread that ‘Ashwatthama has been killed…’ Hearing this, Drona became distraught and wanted to know the truth from Yudhishthira. Yudhishthir was Dharmaraja and never told lies. In such a situation, when Dronacharya asked the truth, Yudhishthi said ‘Ashwatthama hato naro wa kunjaro wa’ (Ashwatthama has been killed, but Gaja). ‘But Gaja’ he spoke very softly so that Drona could not hear and he gave up his weapons, closed his eyes and started mourning for his son., Seeing Guru Drona unarmed, Draupadi’s brother Dyushtadyumna beheaded Dronacharya with his sword. Only after the death of Dronacharya did the Pandavas return to war and now the Kauravas gradually became weak. With the death of Duryodhana, this fierce war of Mahabharata ended.
Ashwatthama was a great devotee of Lord Shiva.
Ashwatthama, murderer of Draupadi’s 5 sons
Even after the Mahabharata war ended, Ashwatthama wanted to take revenge from the Pandavas for his father’s death and wanted to eliminate the Pandavas. In such a situation, he planned to go to the camp of Pandavas. Draupadi’s five sons were sleeping in the camp. Ashwatthama killed these five, thinking them to be Pandavas in the dark. Ashwatthama did not stop here, he fought with the Pandavas and took out Brahmastra to destroy them. Seeing Ashwatthama using the Brahmastra, Arjun also left the Brahmastra. But this weapon is so powerful that it could destroy the entire world. In such a situation, Shri Krishna asked Arjun to take back the Brahmastra, so Arjun did the same. But When Ashwatthama was asked to take back the Brahmastra, he did not know how to take it back, rather he changed its direction and directed it towards the child growing in the womb of Abhimanyu’s widow Uttara. On this incident, Shri Krishna cursed Ashwatthama that this miraculous gem on his forehead should be snatched away and now this wound will always ooze and hurt. He has killed the child in the womb, he himself will now yearn for death and will continue to wander till the end of this earth.
