New Delhi, 16 April (IANS). The chronic pain (chronic pen), which has been three months or more, can increase the possibility of depression up to four times. This information has been revealed in a study.
About 30 percent of people worldwide are troubled by rough pain such as back pain or migraine. One of these people has a problem of pain in more than one place.
The study found that there is a higher risk of depression in case of pain in more than one part of the body than in one place.
Dustin Sheenost, Professor of the Department of Radiology of Yale School of Medicine, said, “Pain is not just the body, it also affects the mind. Our research shows that physical illnesses can also affect mental health.”
Researchers also found that pain and depression may also have a relationship due to inflammation in the body. A protein associated with inflammation can help understand this relationship (which is formed by liver in response to inflammation).
The study is based on data from more than 4 lakh 31 thousand people of UK Biobank, which were followed for 14 years. The pain was divided into parts like head, face, neck, back, abdomen, waist, knee and normal pain.
Research also revealed that even if the pain is in any part of the body, if it remains for a long time, it increases the possibility of depression.
Professor Sheenost said, “We often consider mental health to be different from other parts of the body such as heart or liver, but the reality is that all our body parts affect each other.”
Researchers believe that if the causes behind pain and depression are deepened, it can help in finding treatment.
