Assam Chief Minister Himant Vishwa Sharma said on Friday that the decision to give arms license to the local people in ‘sensitive’ areas was taken after much deliberation as it is the responsibility of the state government to provide them protection.
The Chief Minister said in the press conference here that the Constitution has also given these people the right to life and has also given the right to keep arms under some rules and regulations.
He said, “It is the responsibility of the state government to provide security to the local people and hence it has decided to give them weapons license in sensitive areas along the international border.”
The State Cabinet decided on Wednesday after reviewing the “demand” of the people living in these areas.
The Chief Minister said that Assamese people living in some areas are feeling insecure and they have been demanding a long time to provide arms licenses.
Regarding criticizing the move by opposition parties, Sharma said that Congress and some people have always been opposing the decisions of the government, so ‘we cannot take it seriously’.
The Congress, Trinamool Congress and Assam Ethnic Council (AJP) have criticized the state government’s decision to liberalize the arms license policy.
