Diwali is here, Diwali will be celebrated with great pomp across the country on 31st October. Houses have been decorated, preparations for puja are going on. Firecrackers will also be burst. The children are already busy bursting crackers. This is a matter of celebration, now let us know what orders have been issued in which states regarding firecrackers. Keeping in mind the air quality, firecrackers have been completely banned in the country’s capital Delhi. At the same time, many other states have imposed restrictions to some extent regarding firecrackers during Diwali. In view of environmental concerns, many strict rules regarding firecrackers have been implemented in many states like Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and Tamil Nadu. These rules are aimed at reducing the deterioration in air quality during this festive period.

Delhi imposes complete ban on firecrackers

Usually known for its severe air quality every winter, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has imposed a complete ban on the manufacture, storage, sale and use of firecrackers by January 1, 2025. This also includes online sales. However, only ‘green crackers’, which are less harmful, are allowed in the city, and that too for just two hours on Diwali night from 8 pm to 10 pm. The use of firecrackers has also been banned on Gurupurva, Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Green crackers are allowed because they do not contain toxic chemicals like barium and lead used in firecrackers.

Firecrackers banned in some cities of Bihar

Major cities like Patna, Gaya, Muzaffarpur and Hajipur in Bihar have completely banned all types of firecrackers – including green crackers.

Maharashtra bans Sky Lanterns along with firecrackers

Maharashtra has completely banned firecrackers and only green crackers are allowed. Which produce about 30% less pollution than normal firecrackers. Apart from this, Mumbai Police has also banned the use and sale of Sky Lantern from October 23 to November 24.

Karnataka allowed only green crackers

The Karnataka government has allowed only green crackers during Diwali and suggested bursting crackers only for two hours between 8 pm and 10 pm. However, no formal ban has been issued regarding this yet.

Ban imposed on firecrackers

Punjab and Haryana governments take strict stance on firecrackers

This Diwali, Punjab and Haryana governments have also taken a strict stance regarding the use of firecrackers. Following the directions of the Supreme Court and NGT, the governments here have also banned the use and sale of firecrackers on other major festivals including Diwali, Guru Parv, Christmas and New Year’s Eve. In Haryana, especially in Gurugram, there has been a lot of strictness regarding firecrackers. Here also the same rules have been implemented as in Delhi. However, during certain hours on Diwali and Guru Parv, burning of green crackers is permitted.

Time slots fixed for bursting crackers in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu has found a unique way to avoid air pollution in view of Diwali. In which the time slot for firecrackers on Diwali has been fixed from 6 am to 7 am and from 7 pm to 8 pm. Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has also issued an advisory for responsible use of firecrackers to reduce pollution and noise levels. Which is mandatory to follow.
