A case of love jihad has come to light from Bhubaneswar, Odisha. On Friday, a complaint has been lodged against a youth from Jammu and Kashmir in the Mahila Police Station of Bhubaneswar. Allegedly the young man had been instigating the girl from Jagatsinghpur to convert to religion for a long time. The accused youth has been identified as Sameer Mansoor, who is a resident of Bihar and is currently working in Jammu and Kashmir. The victim is a resident of Pathuria village under Kujang police limits of Jagatsinghpur district of Odisha.

The victim and the Muslim youth came in contact with each other through the online gaming app ‘Free Fire’ in 2022. Gradually their closeness grew and a deep friendship developed between them. The young man started seducing the girl while hiding his religious identity. According to the information, in March 2024, the accused came to Odisha and met the woman.

The accused has extorted Rs 5 lakh from the victim

While staying in a hotel in Puri, accused Sameer allegedly had physical relations with her and also made a video of her. According to the victim’s complaint, Sameer had also forced her to change her religion in order to marry him. However, when the victim came to know that he belonged to another community, she rejected the proposal. Angered by this, the young man started blackmailing her by threatening to make some of her photos and videos public. The accused has allegedly extorted around Rs 5 lakh from the girl’s family by blackmailing her.

The victim says, “Me and Sameer have known each other for 2 years. At first I thought he was a Hindu, but after a few days I came to know that he is a Muslim and his real name is Sameer Mansoor. He is from Bihar but Works in Kashmir. Sameer is now blackmailing me and my family members. I want justice in this matter.” The women police have registered the complaint of the victim and started investigating the case.

What did the police say?

Bhubaneswar’s Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Shubhanarayan Mriduli said, “A woman has lodged a complaint in our women’s police station that a young man has sexually exploited her. She has also accused the young man of extorting money and giving death threats.” We have also filed a complaint against the young man and have recorded the woman’s statement for medical examination. And we will take further action in the matter as per the procedure.” Sections 376 (1), 385,386,294,506 of IPC and 66 (e),67,67 (a) of IT Act have been imposed on accused Sameer Mansoor.
