There is a new twist in the RG Kar Medical College rape-murder case as senior lawyer Vrinda Grover will no longer represent the victim’s family, sources said on Thursday.
Grover Chamber said in a statement that the concerned trial court before which the rape-murder case is being heard has been informed accordingly and the lawyers have been relieved from the case.
It said that at this stage, due to “certain intervening factors and circumstances”, senior counsel Vrinda Grover “is obliged to withdraw from the litigation in this matter” and will no longer represent the victim’s family.
Sources said the victim’s parents had requested Grover’s chambers, including advocates Soutik Banerjee and Arjun Guptu, to provide legal representation in the Supreme Court, Calcutta High Court, Sealdah Sessions Court and ACJM court.
He said that Grover Chamber will provide free legal services and representation to the victim’s family in all courts from September 2024.
The statement said, “The victim’s family has also been represented before the ACJM court for day-to-day hearing in the Sealdah Sessions Court from November 4, 2024 and for remand hearing on all dates of production from September 25, 2024. “
The Court said that during this period the evidence of 43 prosecution witnesses was recorded and the bail of other accused was consistently and successfully opposed.
Meanwhile, BJP leader Amil Malviya raised questions, saying, “Senior advocate Vrinda Grover has recused herself from representing the victim’s family in the RG Kar rape and murder case. Following significant progress in the case, she has approached various courts. It has also ended its scheme of providing free legal aid.,
He further wrote, “Given his proximity to Mamata Banerjee and the TMC leadership, he should not have been involved in this case, who is one of the main actors in this case. This is not a surprising development.”

The body of a post-graduate trainee doctor on duty was found on August 9 in the seminar room of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The post-mortem of the body revealed that she had been raped and brutally murdered.
After hearing several PILs on this matter, the High Court had handed over the investigation of the case from Kolkata Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). These PILs also included a petition by the victim’s parents, who demanded an impartial investigation into their daughter’s death.
