Supreme Court expressed objection to the order of Bengal government
The case of rape and murder of a female doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital was heard in the Supreme Court today. Recently, the Bengal government had instructed not to give night shifts in hospitals for the safety of female doctors. The Supreme Court has expressed strong displeasure over this order of the Bengal government. Along with this, the Supreme Court has also asked to change this order of the Bengal government.
Why are restrictions being imposed on women doctors- SC
During the hearing on Tuesday, Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said, “How can you (Bengal government) say that women cannot work at night? Why are restrictions being imposed on women doctors? They do not want concessions. Women are ready to work in a single shift.”
Bengal government should amend its order-SC
The Chief Justice said, ‘Sibal (Bengal government’s lawyer) you need to look into this issue. The solution lies in ensuring proper security measures. The West Bengal government should amend its order. It is your responsibility to provide security to the women doctors of the state. You cannot stop women from working at night. Pilots, army personnel and others also work at night.’
Bengal government should implement the conditions- Junior doctor
During the hearing, junior doctors told the Supreme Court that they have no problem in returning to their duty provided that the measures discussed in the meeting with Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday are implemented. The doctors said that they will have another meeting today to discuss returning to work.
