Ahmedabad. Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday said that a large number of refugees in the country were not given citizenship rights due to the appeasement politics of previous governments led by the Congress and its allies.
Addressing a gathering in Ahmedabad after issuing citizenship certificates to 188 Hindu refugees in Gujarat, Shah said that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is to give lakhs of refugees their rights and justice.
He also assured Muslims that there is no provision in CAA to take away anyone’s citizenship as it is about giving citizenship. He said that previous governments allowed crores of infiltrators to enter the country and made them citizens illegally.
Shah said that they did not give citizenship to those who followed the law and applied for citizenship, saying that there is no legal provision for it. The Union Minister said, “Due to the appeasement policy of the previous governments of Congress and its allies, the people who came to the country for refuge did not get their rights and justice.”
