Islamabad: The Sri Lankan government will release 43 Pakistani prisoners from jails so that they can return to their country. This is the result of an agreement between the two countries regarding the repatriation of prisoners lodged in each other’s jails. This information was given in media reports on Saturday. According to the news of ‘Dawn’ newspaper, Pakistan’s Home Minister Mohsin Naqvi agreed on the repatriation of prisoners lodged in the jails of both the countries in a meeting with Sri Lankan High Commissioner Admiral (Retd.) Ravindra Chandra Srivijaya Gunaratne on Friday.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed issues of mutual interest and development of bilateral relations. They also agreed to enhance cooperation in the field of security and counter-narcotics, the report said. Pakistan’s Home Ministry has been working closely with Sri Lankan authorities since last month to bring back 43 Pakistani prisoners. After this, Naqvi announced that the arrangement for the return of Pakistani prisoners will be finalised within a few days. The minister thanked the Sri Lankan High Commissioner for his support in the return of the prisoners to their home country.
Pakistani citizens were sentenced
Let us tell you that, recently a Sri Lankan court had sentenced ten Pakistani citizens arrested for smuggling large quantities of drugs to 10 years of imprisonment each. Police had said that the accused accepted their crime and were later sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment. (Language)
