3 Indian cricketers have also converted for different reasons
New Delhi. There have been many players in the cricket world who have changed their religion. There have been many cricketers in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and South Africa who have converted for different reasons. Some of them have done this before marriage and some after marriage. From Team India’s former batsman Vinod Kambli to Robin Uthappa, they have changed their religion. Foreign players include Yusuf Yohana of Pakistan, Suraj Randiv of Sri Lanka and Wayne Parnell of South Africa. People now know Yousuf Yohana, who is called the ‘Run Machine’ of Pakistan, by the name of Mohammad Yousuf.
Former Indian cricket team batsman Vinod Kambli married a Christian girl in 1998. However, Kambli’s marriage with Noella Lewis did not last long and they soon got divorced. Born in a Hindu family, the girl whom Kambli married for the second time was also from a Christian family. Kambli changed his religion after his second marriage to Andrea Hewitt. That means he changed from Hindu to Christian. Kambli and Havid had a court marriage. Kambli has two children with Andrea.

Former Team India opener Robin Uthappa’s father Venu Uthappa is Hindu and mother Roselyn Christian. Uthappa converted his religion in 2011. He remained a Hindu till the age of 25. Uthappa is half Kodava and mother is Malayali. Venu Uthappa is a former hockey umpire. He is a Kodava Hindu. Uthappa is married to a Hindu girl. They got married according to both the customs. Now he is following Christianity. Former Sri Lankan explosive opener Tillakaratne Dilshan was born in a Muslim family. Although he left Islam at the age of 16. Later he left Islam and adopted Buddhism. After the separation of his parents, he changed both his name and religion. His mother was from Buddhist religion.
Former Indian right-handed batsman AG Kripal Singh was the first cricketer to convert to religion. He was born in a Sikh family. He made a Christian girl his partner. After marriage he adopted Christianity. Kripal Singh changed his name to Arnold George after changing his religion. Kripal Singh later stopped wearing turban and also got his beard cut. He played 14 test matches for India in which he scored 422 runs with his bat. This included one century and two half-centuries. South African fast bowler Wayne Parnell has left Christianity and adopted Islam. The above mentioned cricketers said that they converted not under any pressure but on their own free will.
