Houston: A pickup truck in Texas and a van carrying students from a university in the neighboring state of New Mexico crashed, officials said. At least nine people, including six college students, died in the accident. Members of the University of the Southwest’s men’s and women’s golf teams were involved in the accident, Xinhua news agency quoted university officials as saying.
On Wednesday, Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Sergeant Steven Blanco said the accident occurred at around 8.17 p.m. on a two-lane road about 14 km northwest of the city of Andrews, northwest of Midland-Odessa.
Blanco said that the cause is not known, the horrific accident occurred when a Dodge pickup, a Ford passenger van collided.
“After the collision, both the vehicles caught fire and they got burnt.”
A statement issued by the university said that nine passengers, including the coach, were on board the university bus involved in the accident. Although the investigation into the accident is still underway, reports suggest that seven passengers on board the bus died in the accident.
The statement said that the condition of two passengers remains critical, who are being treated in Lubbock, Texas.
The driver and a passenger in the pickup truck also died after the accident, the DPS said.
The university said members of the men’s and women’s golf teams were on their way back from a competition to its New Mexico campus.
According to a CNN report, the weather was clear in the area on Tuesday evening.
The cause of the accident is under investigation.
