new Delhi. Trinamool Congress MP and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee on Monday joined the probe into a money laundering case related to the coal scam being probed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Banerjee reached the ED office in Delhi around 11.10 am on Monday and went straight inside. He did not speak to the media.
His wife Rujira Banerjee will join the investigation on Tuesday.
The anti-money laundering agency had asked Banerjee and his wife to join the probe on March 21 and 22.
ED officials will once again record his statement.
Banerjee had earlier recorded her statement before the ED officials on September 6. He was interrogated by them for about six hours. But the investigating agency was not satisfied with his reply. After which he has been summoned again along with his wife.
In September last year, Banerjee and his wife, through their counsel, had filed a petition in the Delhi High Court against the ED summons, but did not get any relief. His plea was dismissed by the High Court on March 11.
Abhishek and his wife had sought relief on the ground that they were residents of West Bengal. However, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the ED, challenged his contention. He told the court that the ED is not confined to any area under the PMLA.
The CBI and ED are conducting parallel investigation in this case.
