President Ram Nath Kovind, who arrived in Assam on a three-day visit, attended the 19th convocation of Tezpur University here on Saturday. During his address at the function, President Kovind said that he was happy to see that the University is promoting women empowerment through education.

During his address, Kovind said that he has been told that today around 1,250 students have graduated, of which about 45 per cent are women. Of the 47 students who have been awarded gold medals, 27 are girls and this is more than half of the total number of gold medalists.
He said that I have seen that in most of the convocations, our daughters have performed better than the boys. On this remarkable achievement, I extend my special congratulations to each and every daughter. During this, he also urged to make the university a major center of innovation.
During his address, President Kovind also appreciated the efforts being made by Tezpur University to provide drinking water in the villages of Assam. He said that the participation of the students with the rural population is one of the key features of USR. Tezpur University may adopt some villages under this initiative to help in their overall development. Kovind said that special emphasis is being given on development initiatives for the eastern part of India, especially the Northeast.
During this, President Kovind also appreciated the initiative of the Assam government to conserve biodiversity. He said that he would also visit Kaziranga National Park to see it. During the address, the President also mentioned the famous Joha rice of Assam. He said that its taste is never forgotten.
The President further said that the Union Government has decided to set up a digital university to provide access to world-class universal education with a personalized learning experience for students across the country. Various Indian languages education will be provided in this digital university. Tezpur University can actively contribute to this initiative by providing high quality digital content in Assamese and other languages of the Northeast.
