President Mohammed Muizzu’s party People’s National Congress (PNC) has won a landslide victory in the parliamentary elections in Maldives. China has congratulated Mohammad Muizzu’s party People’s National Congress for the victory. During this, China has expressed its desire to further strengthen the “comprehensive strategic cooperation partnership” between the two countries. The effect of this move of China will be seen soon. Relations between India and Maldives are not normal at present and China is taking advantage of this.
China’s reaction
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin, reacting to the PNC’s victory in a press conference, said that China congratulates the Maldives for the successful parliamentary elections and respects the people’s choice. “China will step up its efforts to enhance traditional friendship, exchanges and cooperation in various fields, deepen the China-Maldives comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership, and bring greater benefits to the people of the two countries,” he said.
Maldives gets closer to China
Mohammad Muizzu has become closer to China since becoming President by defeating pro-India Mohammad Solih in October last year. He had a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in January. Following the meeting, the two countries signed a “comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership” in addition to 20 agreements to support the Maldives’ infrastructure.

Not only this, PNC’s alliance partners Maldives National Party (MNP) have won one seat and Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) have won two seats.
