A special court on Friday sentenced 38 members of terrorist organization Indian Mujahideen (IM) to death in the 2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts case. In the same case, the court sentenced 11 other IM convicts to life imprisonment. However, the prosecution had sought death sentence for all the 49 convicts in the blast case, including the conspirators and the bombers.
56 people were killed and more than 200 people were injured in these blasts. This is the first time in the country that a court has awarded death sentence to the maximum number of convicts in one go. Regarding the 38 convicts, the court said, “For those who carry out such terrorist activities, death penalty is the only option for the peace and security of the country and its people.”
Special Judge AR Patel in his order said, “The convicts created unrest in a peaceful society and carried out anti-national activities while staying here.” They have no respect for the constitutionally elected government at the Center and in Gujarat and some of them believe only in Allah and not in the government and the judiciary.’
The court observed that there is no need for the government to keep the convicts in jail, especially those who said that ‘they believe only in their God and not in any other, and there is no such prison in the country which will keep them forever’. to be able to close.’
The court also ordered a compensation of Rs 1 lakh to the next of kin of those killed in the blasts, Rs 50,000 to the seriously injured and Rs 25,000 to those with minor injuries.
