In the Bithri Chainpur assembly constituency of the district, all the major parties including the BJP have fielded new faces in the election riot. This constituency was earlier known as Sanha. After the delimitation, a new constituency of Bithri Chainpur has been made by adding rural areas of the assembly constituency of Cantt. Opium cultivation has been done in this area.
Virendra Singh was elected MLA on a BSP ticket in the 2012 assembly elections held after delimitation in this constituency. He was earlier MLA from Cantt area in 2007. In the 2017 elections from this constituency, BJP’s Rajesh Mishra alias Pappu Bharataul reached the assembly after winning the election. Instead of repeating Pappu Bharataul from here, BJP has fielded Dr. Raghavendra Sharma of Sangh background by cutting his ticket. The BSP has fielded Ashish Patel, son of former MLA late Virendra Singh, here. In the election riots here on behalf of SP, former district president of the party Agam Maurya is making a ruckus. Congress has bet on BJP’s rebel woman leader Alka Singh here.
Muslims constitute 19 percent of the total three lakh 92 thousand 107 voters of this area. The upper castes are 44 percent here, in which the majority of the voters are from the Kshatriya community. There is also a good number of Brahmin voters here. Vaishyas, Kayasthas and other upper castes are relatively less in number. The backward castes are 24 per cent which include Lodhs, Kurmis, Yadavs and Kashyaps. Dalit castes constitute 12 per cent here. Punjabis and other castes are one per cent. BJP candidate Dr. Raghavendra Sharma is campaigning from house to house on the issue of development. They are trying to bring people into their fold by counting the welfare schemes of Modi and Yogi government, but here they are also likely to get the benefit of polarization.
SP candidate Agam Maurya’s electoral hopes rest on Muslims and backward castes. BSP candidate Ashish Patel is seeking votes by counting the development works done in the area from 2007 to 2017 during the two-term tenure of his father, former MLA Virendra Singh. His father was very popular in the area. Angered by not getting a BJP ticket, Alka Singh, who rebelled, is a Congress candidate. She is contesting elections on women’s safety, development of the region and other issues.
