Jakarta: After Brazil, severe floods and landslides have caused devastation in Indonesia too. 14 people died due to floods and landslides in Sulawesi island of Indonesia. Mexianus Bekabel, head of the local rescue agency, said the landslide was caused by torrential rains since Thursday in the Luvu district of South Sulawesi province.
So far, 13 sub-districts have been affected by floods in Indonesia. Water and mud are visible at most places in the area. More than 1,000 houses have been affected due to the rain, out of which 42 have been destroyed. A search and rescue team evacuated residents to safety using rubber boats and other vehicles. National Disaster Management Agency spokesman Abdul Muhari said on Saturday that more than 100 residents had been evacuated to mosques or their relatives’ homes outside the affected area. (AP)

The regional governor is calling it the most devastating rain and landslide ever. According to Al Jazeera’s report, the death toll due to the disaster has reached 37 and 74 people are reported missing. The death toll may increase. Rain and landslides in the state have given people sleepless nights. Emergency operations have been launched to locate survivors trapped amid the debris of collapsed houses, bridges and roads.
Rescue operations are ongoing and the death toll may increase. In view of the situation, Governor Eduardo Leite has declared a state of emergency. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has pledged full support to the affected area and assured that there will be no shortage of human or material resources to mitigate the problems caused by the extreme weather conditions.
