Indigo Airlines cofounder Rakesh Gangwal has donated Rs 100 crore to IIT Kanpur. This amount was given to help in the construction of SMRT (School of Medical Research and Technology) being built in the institute. This is the largest amount donated by any alumnus to the institute.
Director Prof. Abhay Karandikar tweeted and said, “This project will be completed soon after getting the money. 500 crore will be spent in the first phase. Under SMRT, a 500-bed multi-superspecialty hospital will also be opened in the institute. Along with engineering, medical studies will also be done in IITs. According to the utility of the medical field, equipment will also be developed along with research. Serious diseases will also be treated.
Pro. Karandikar met IndiGo Airlines co-founder Rakesh Gangwal in Mumbai on Monday. Rakesh did his B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from the institute in the year 1975. After listening to the director’s project, he gave the help of 100 crores. The construction work will start soon.
What is SMRT
School of Medical Research and Technology is coming up in IIT on about 1000 acres. There will be a hospital in 247 acres. Asia’s renowned company Healthcare Management and Hosmac have been appointed for the design. Along with research, there will also be treatment here. In the first phase, many PG courses including cardiology, urology, cardiothoracic, nephrology, surgical gastroenterology, neurology, neurosurgery and oncology will be taught. Here equipment with the help of engineering will also be developed for the treatment of neurology, orthopedic, liver, kidney and cancer. In the second phase, admission will be done in MBBS.
