Washington: A report released by an independent research unit of the US Parliament has claimed that the provisions of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) implemented in India this year may violate some articles of the Indian Constitution. CAA was implemented in March this year by amending India’s 1955 Citizenship Act. The ‘In Focus’ report of the ‘Congressional Research Service (CRS)’ claimed that key provisions of the CAA may violate some articles of the Indian Constitution. Under the CAA, non-Muslim immigrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who came to India before December 31, 2014, will get citizenship.
This was said in the report
Opponents of the law warn that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party are pushing a Hindu majoritarian, anti-Muslim agenda, undermining India’s image as an officially secular republic, the report said. It becomes foggy. It also violates international human rights norms and obligations.
Threat to minority rights
CRS’s three-page ‘In Focus’ report alleged that the NRC and CAA laws planned by the Indian government threaten the rights of India’s approximately 20 crore Muslim minorities. The CRS report told the US Parliament that in the year 2019, the US diplomat had expressed concerns about the CAA. However, this will not affect the relations between India and America.
the purpose is humanitarian
The Indian government and other supporters of the CAA have claimed that its purpose is purely humanitarian. The Indian government has rejected criticism against the CAA, saying it should not be termed as “vote bank politics” while it is a ‘commendable initiative’ to help people in distress. (Language)
