14 people were granted Indian citizenship with the issuance of the first set of citizenship certificates under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) on Wednesday. The decision to grant citizenship to 14 applicants was taken after proper investigation conducted by the government. According to the Union Home Ministry, after the implementation of these rules, applications have been received from persons belonging to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi and Christian communities from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. These are those people who came to India till 31.12.2014 due to religious persecution or fear of it.
CAA implemented on ground
With this, the process of granting citizenship to non-Muslim immigrants who came to India after being tortured in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh has started. Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla handed over the certificates to 14 people after online approval of the applications through a designated portal, an official spokesperson said.

Who will get citizenship?
The CAA was introduced in December 2019 to provide Indian citizenship to non-Muslim migrants who were persecuted in Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan and who came to India on or before December 31, 2014. Only people from these three countries will be able to apply for citizenship. These include people from Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi and Christian communities. On Wednesday, Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla handed over citizenship certificates to some applicants in New Delhi. On this occasion, the Home Secretary, while congratulating the applicants, highlighted the key points of the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024. During this, many senior officials including Secretary, Posts, Director (Intelligence) and Registrar General of India were present.

The Government of India had notified the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024 on March 11, 2024. These rules provide for the manner of applying, the process for processing applications by the District Level Committee (DLC) and the scrutiny of applications by the State Level Empowered Committee (EC) and granting of citizenship. District Level Committees (DLCs) headed by Senior Postal Superintendents/Postal Superintendents as authorized officers have administered the Oath of Allegiance to the applicants after successful verification of documents. After processing the applications as per rules, DLC has sent the applications to the State Level Empowered Committee (EC) headed by the Director (Census Operations).
