Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday described the priority of his government to establish peace in Manipur. He said that for this, talks would be started with all underground groups operating in the state. He also stressed that all smuggling activities in Manipur would be stopped and claimed that the state would be made “drug free” in the next five years.
Addressing a rally organized at Hirok in Thobal district, Shah said, “We have done this in Assam and Tripura, where 9,500 youths left arms and joined the mainstream.” He said, “No youth will go to jail, no one will have a weapon in their hands, rather they will all join the mainstream and contribute to the development of the nation.” Last week, the opposition Congress in the state filed a complaint with the Election Commission alleging that an extremist group (Kuki National Organisation) has issued statements in support of the ruling BJP.
Taking a jibe at the Congress, Shah said the oldest party had failed to provide even basic facilities when it was in power in Manipur, which earlier had electricity for only five to six hours a day. The Union Home Minister claimed that since the BJP came to power, electricity has been provided to all the villages of Manipur and 24 hours electricity is being supplied.
He alleged that the Congress had divided the state by creating tension among different communities while the BJP has great respect for the culture and identity of the state. Shah also made several promises regarding the development of Manipur during the rally. In Manipur, voting will be held on March 5 in the second phase of the assembly elections.
The opposition accuses Shah, saying – there was no fair voting
The Congress on Tuesday accused Union Home Minister Amit Shah of preparing a statement issued by banned extremist outfit Kuki asking the people of Manipur to vote for the Bharatiya Janata Party. Congress demanded re-polling in two districts, alleging that voting was not free and fair in the first phase of assembly elections held on February 28. Jairam Ramesh, senior observer of the All India Congress Committee, claimed that sporadic incidents of violence from Kangpokpi and Churachandpur districts during polling were a result of the impact of the Kuki National Organizations (KNO) statement.
He said, “This statement was prepared by Union Home Minister and Chief Minister N Biren Singh and issued in the name of KNO.” Let’s say that KNO had threatened all those who did not vote for BJP due to which elections were not held in a free, fair and peaceful manner.
