Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has made a big statement regarding Bengali-speaking Muslims. He laid down certain conditions for Bengali-speaking Muslims to become native inhabitants of Assam. The CM said in his statement that if Bengali-speaking Muslims have to become native residents of the state, they will have to give up practices like child marriage and polygamy. Only if they do so, the original inhabitants of the state will be considered ‘Khilonjia’. He also said that these people will have to send their children to schools instead of madrasas so that they can become doctors and engineers.
‘…then they will also be considered ‘indigenous”
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had earlier held the state’s Bengali-speaking Muslim community responsible for social evils. He also said that whether Mians (Bengali-speaking Muslims) were natives or not was a different matter. What we are saying is that if they want to become ‘native’, we have no problem but for this they have to give up child marriage and polygamy and encourage women to pursue education. The state Chief Minister said that if Bengali-speaking Muslims could follow Assamese customs, they would also be considered ‘indigenous’.
‘A culture of the Assamese people’
The CM said that Assamese people have a culture in which girls are compared to ‘Shakti’ (goddess) and marrying two-three times is not Assamese culture. He further said, “I always tell them, there is no problem in ‘Mian’ being Swadeshi but he cannot have two-three wives. This is not Assamese culture. How does someone want to become a native by encroaching the Sattra (Vaishnav Math) land?”
Muslim population in Assam
CM said that the population of Muslims in Assam is significant, according to the 2011 census, the number of Muslims in the total population of the state is more than 34 percent. This population consists of two distinct ethnicities – Bengali-speaking and migrant Muslims of Bangladesh origin and Assamese-speaking indigenous Muslims.
