Guwahati. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that an award ceremony will be held on April 23 to honor the soldiers who took part in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. Sarma, after holding a meeting with ministers and officials about the upcoming program, said Defense Minister Rajnath Singh would attend the function as the chief guest.
The Chief Minister said that though many officers and defense personnel of the North-East region played an important role in the Bangladesh Liberation War, we still know very little about their sacrifices and performances.
“These officers trained thousands of freedom fighters of Mukti Bahini to compete with the Pakistan Army,” the chief minister said.
While thousands of security personnel and civilians from northeastern states helped ‘mukti warriors’ (freedom fighters of Bangladesh) during the nine-month-long Bangladesh Liberation War, more than 20,00,000 Bangladeshi refugees took refuge in Tripura, Meghalaya and Assam.
