The Indian team, led by two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu and world champion medalists Srikanth and Lakshya Sen, will compete in the German Opener Super 300 badminton tournament, starting Tuesday. Sindhu had won the Syed Modi International title and Lakshya won the Super 500 trophy in January, while Srikanth was later ruled out of the World Championships due to a COVID-19 infection.
After the gold medal at the World Championships 2019, Sindhu had to wait for the title till the 2022 Syed Modi tournament in Lucknow. Seventh seed Sindhu will open her campaign against world number 11 Busanan Ongbamrungphan of Thailand. On the other hand, eighth seeded Indian player Srikanth will face France’s Bryce Leverdez in his first campaign.
Almora’s goals are running in form
Lakshya, silver medalist at the ongoing World Championships in good form, has made full use of his opportunities. He won a bronze medal in Huelva, Spain and then the India Open title in January. He was the only one to make an impressive showing in the Indian campaign at the Asian Team Championships in Malaysia last month. Almora’s target is to play against Thailand’s Kentaphon Wangcharon in the first round.
Pranay may get tough challenge
After recovering from COVID-19, HS Prannoy made it to the last eight of three consecutive tournaments in the form of World Championships, India Open and Syed Modi International. They will face a tough challenge from 7th seed Ng Ka Long Angus in the first round. On the other hand, London Olympics bronze medalist Saina Nehwal will open her campaign against Yeo Jia Min of Singapore.
Ashwini-Reddy will present the challenge in doubles
In women’s doubles, Ashwini Ponnappa and N Sikki Reddy will face fifth seeded Japanese pair of Nami Mamsuyama and Chiharu Shida. On the other hand, Trisa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand will play against Netherlands’ Deborah Zill and Cheryl Senen in the first round. Srikanth said that this is an important year and I want to train well so that I can perform to the best of my ability.
