Tumkur (Karnataka). The Tumakuru district administration in Karnataka is concerned about sacrificing bulls instead of buffaloes to please the deities. The new law related to animal sacrifice was passed in December last year. Under this, the slaughter of cows, cow calves, bulls of all ages and buffaloes below 13 years of age was banned.
The aim of the ban on animal sacrifice is to create awareness about cruelty to any animal. However, villagers who have sacrificed animals to the gods for hundreds of years are adamant on continuing the practice.
Villagers of Belibatlu village in Tumakuru district have sacrificed oxen instead of buffalo. According to Varadaraju, Tehsildar of Pavagada, the officials will collect information regarding the sacrifice in the village and submit a report to the district commissioner for further action.
Meanwhile, the villagers expressed anger over the dispute over the sacrifice of bullocks to the deities. He claimed that throughout the Pavagada taluk, animals are sacrificed for the worship of the Shakti deities.
He said that since bulls are sacrificed in the entire taluk since a month, there is no need to highlight the issue, underlining that it has been a tradition for centuries.
In Belibatlu village, oxen were sacrificed to the deity Chaudeshwari, as the ancient temple is being renovated. According to tradition, goats, rams and buffaloes are sacrificed in a ritualistic manner.
In 2007, an objection was raised to the practice of sacrificing buffaloes and a complaint was lodged with the district administration.
Villagers said the district commissioner had then banned buffalo sacrifice and suggested that they sacrifice some other animal. From then on the elders started sacrificing the bullocks.
However, some villagers again complained to the District Commissioner and Superintendent of Police in this regard on May 9 and appealed to stop the sacrifice of bullocks.
